Fort Concho and the Friends of Fairmont Cemetery will co-host a special
memorial ceremony at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, September 9th, to mark the 145th
anniversary of the death of Edith Grierson, the thirteen year old daughter of the
post commander and his wife, Ben and Alice Grierson. The ceremony will begin
near the center gazebo off the main entrance to the cemetery. Bob Bluthardt, site
manager of Fort Concho, will provide a short history of Edith’s life and the lives of
children of that era. Edith passed away on Sept. 9, 1878 after contracting typhoid
fever. Edith’s death was mourned by the entire garrison. She was buried in the
original post cemetery just to the west of the fort before being moved in 1899 to
Fairmount Cemetery.
